The good news is this delicious Plum Crisp Crumble recipe is vegetarian, nut-free, and egg-free. With some substitutions, it can also be vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free.
At the heart of our crisp crumble lies a luscious filling of succulent plums, gently sweetened with a hint of sugar and plumy jam subtly infused with vanilla. As the plums bake, they release their juices, creating a tender and flavorful center that forms the foundation of this lush dessert.
The crumbly topping adds a lovely contrast of textures, with its golden crust tones giving way to buttery notes that melt in the mouth.
Crumble is a popular dessert in many English-speaking countries. We have a few plum trees in our garden, specifically Victoria plum trees. When the plums are ripe at the end of the summer season, our garden soon resembles a carpet of plums and our huskies love it! You can’t beat plums from the garden; they’re easy to grow, sweet, and taste much nicer than store-bought.

Let’s Talk Ingredients
We feel every ingredient adds to the overall taste and texture; if you remove one, it’s like you’ve removed them all.
- Plums โ for best results, use ripe plums.
- Sugar โ use golden caster sugar to bind with the plum filling. Avoid using granulated sugar because the granules are more difficult to break down.
- Vanilla Extract โ use Nielsen Massey, which is made with real vanilla beans and alcohol. The vanilla is quite potent and adds a beautiful richness to desserts.
- Plum Jam โ we suggest using this plum jam because it has a divine taste and is loaded with plums. Alternatively, make your own using our Sweet Plum Apple Jam.
- Flour โ use all-purpose flour.
- Coconut Sugar โ use this coconut sugar for the crumble because it adds flavor and a nice chewy texture.
- Oats โ use rolled oats.
- Butter โ use unsalted or salted butter.
- Baking Powder โ helps with crumble fluffiness, but feel free to use whatever brand you have.
- Spices โ used Ceylon cinnamon and allspice.
- Salt โ we use Himalayan salt; it brings out the flavor and offsets the sweetness.
- Slivered Almonds โ use these slivered almonds, also known as sliced or flaked. They are used to top the crumble and add a great crunch.
For more detailed ingredients, see the recipe card.
Customizations
Here are some foodie alternatives should you want to make some changes:
- Flour โ use brown rice flour; it gives a lovely light texture and is gluten-free.
- Vanilla Extract โ if you prefer a non-alcohol base, use vanilla flavoring.
- Butter โ we tested the crumble with dairy-free butter, and the results were perfect.
- Slivered Almonds โ a great alternative is to add extra sweetness with a sprinkle of coconut sugar; it will darken the crumble top.
NOTE: We’ve included cinnamon and allspice in the crumble, which adds a warm and aromatic element. These spices complement the flavors of the plum filling and the sweet topping. If you don’t have allspice on hand, you can use ground nutmeg.
Looking for something slightly different? Apples are plentiful during the summer season, especially if you have your own apple trees. Try combining the plums with apples to make Plum Apple Jam; they’re a perfect combination.
When substituting ingredients, it’s essential to remember that the taste, texture, and overall result might differ, particularly if you’re substituting many ingredients.

- 2 tbsp Golden Caster Sugar
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
Crisp Crumble
- 150 grams All-Purpose Flour
- 100 grams Coconut Sugar
- 100 grams Rolled Oats
- 100 grams Butter
- 1 tsp Baking Powder
- 1 tsp Ground Ceylon Cinnamon
- ยฝ tsp Ground Allspice - or nutmeg
- ยฝ tsp Himalayan Salt
Topping
- 60 grams Slivered Blanched Almonds - optional
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to Gas 5, 375ยฐF, 190ยฐC.
- Prepare the plums by chopping at least cm in thickness.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped plums, plum jam, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Toss to coat the plums evenly. Set aside.
- In another bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, rolled oats, sugar, spices, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and use your fingertips to rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Using your fingers, a food processor, or a pastry cutter, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Divide the crumble mixture into about 1/2 and 1/2.
- Put one portion of the 1/2 into the greased baking dish and flatten with a clean spoon, flat-based cup, or glass.
- Add the plum mixture mixture to the baking dish.
- Sprinkle the other 1/2 portion of the crumble mixture evenly over the plum filling in the baking dish.
- If you're using slivered blanched almonds, now's the time to sprinkle some over the top of the crumble.
- Place the baking dish on a baking sheet to catch any potential drips, and bake in the preheated oven for about 35-45 minutes, or until the plums are tender and bubbling, and the crumble topping is golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
- Enjoy your homemade crumble!
Notes
- Use fresh, high-quality plums for the best flavor and texture.
- Try combining the plums with the apples; they’re a perfect combination.
- The butter should be cold and cut into small cubes for a perfect crumble topping.
- Use your fingertips or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the dry ingredients until you achieve a crumbly texture. This allows the topping to become crisp and golden during baking.
- Be careful not to overmix the crumble topping. Stop mixing once the ingredients are combined, and the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Overmixing can result in a dense and tough topping rather than a light and crumbly one.
- Adding nuts on top, like slivered almonds or chopped walnuts, can also add crunch and richness.
- Cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, or even a touch of ginger can enhance the flavor of the filling and the crumble topping. Experiment with small amounts of spices to find your preferred balance.
- If you notice the crumble topping is browning too quickly, but the plum filling isn’t fully cooked, cover the dish with aluminum foil for the remaining baking time.
- A baking sheet under the baking dish helps catch any drips that might bubble over during baking.
- Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
- Apples are plentiful during the summer season, especially if you have your own apple trees. Try combining the plums with the apples; they’re a perfect combination. Our Sweet Plum Apple Jamย would be perfect for the filling with this crumble variation.
