Let’s Talk Ingredients
We feel every ingredient adds to the overall taste and texture; if you remove one, it’s like you’ve removed them all.
- Fruit — use fresh figs, not dried.
- Vanilla Ice Cream — use your favorite, though remember high-quality brands aren’t overpowered with artificial vanilla extract and aren’t as creamy.
- Condensed Milk — we use carnation condensed milk, but your favorite brand should work well!
- Milk — use full-fat whole milk for a creamy-tasting milkshake.
- Vanilla Extract — use Nielsen Massey, which is made with real vanilla beans and alcohol. The vanilla is quite potent and adds a beautiful richness.
- Cream — use whipping cream for the decoration.
- Herbs — use mint or basil (optional).
For more detailed ingredients, see the recipe card.
Customizations
Here are some foodie alternatives should you want to make some changes:
- Vanilla Ice Cream — make your own Vanilla Ice Cream, or use dairy-free ice cream.
- Milk — substitute with your favorite milk. Creamy alternatives are cashew milk, soya milk, and oat milk.
- Condensed Milk — for a vegan option, use a coconut-based such as Biona, Nestle’s, or Natures Charm.
- Cream — squirty, readymade whipped cream can be a great option rather than manually whipping a small batch of cream. However, it doesn’t hold its shape and has a tendency to deflate. Make your own Boozy Whipping Cream, or use a dairy-free alternative, or omit it completely.
- Vanilla Extract — if you prefer a non-alcohol base, use vanilla flavoring.
When substituting ingredients, it’s essential to remember that the taste, texture, and overall result might differ, particularly if you’re substituting many ingredients.

Smoothie Vs Milkshake
Smoothies and milkshakes are popular blended beverages, but they have some key differences in ingredients and texture. Here are the main distinctions between the two:
Smoothies:
▶︎ Smoothies typically have a fruit or vegetable base, often made with fresh or frozen fruits and/or vegetables.
▶︎ The liquid component in smoothies can vary, including fruit juice, yogurt, milk (dairy or plant-based), or water.
▶︎ Smoothies are generally thicker and have a more substantial texture due to using fruits, vegetables, and sometimes yogurt. They are often perceived as healthier because they include whole, unprocessed ingredients.
▶︎ Smoothies can be nutrient-dense, providing a good source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber from fruits and vegetables.
▶︎ Various ingredients, including protein powders, greens, nuts, seeds, and supplements, can be used to customize smoothies.
Milkshakes:
▶︎ Milkshakes have a dairy or non-dairy milk base combined with ice cream, resulting in a creamy and sweet beverage.
▶︎ The primary liquid in a milkshake is milk, but some recipes might use alternatives like almond milk or soy milk.
▶︎ Milkshakes have a smooth and creamy texture, mainly due to the presence of ice cream. They are often sweetened with sugar or flavored syrups.
▶︎ Milkshakes are generally higher in calories and sugar than smoothies due to the inclusion of ice cream. They are often considered more indulgent or treat-like.
▶︎ Milkshakes typically have a sweeter flavor profile and are associated with dessert or treat categories. They come in various flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.
The main differences between smoothies and milkshakes lie in their base ingredients, texture, nutritional content, and intended purpose. Smoothies are often considered the healthier and more versatile, while milkshakes are considered a sweet and indulgent treat.

Equipment
- Blender - or stick blender
Ingredients
Milkshake:
- 150 grams Fresh Figs - about 6
- 350 grams Vanilla Ice Cream - Or, try our egg-free vanilla ice cream
- 150 grams Full-Fat Milk - or your favorite
- 2 tbsp Sweetened Condensed Milk - optional
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 120 grams Whipping Cream - or, you can also make your own boozy whipping cream
Topping:
- 4 Fresh Figs
- Sprigs of Mint or Basil - optional
Instructions
Milkshake
- Put the glasses in the freezer to cool quickly.
- Wash and slice 2 figs into small rounds of 2-3 mm. Then, wash and chop the remaining four.
- Add the chopped figs, vanilla ice cream, vanilla, condensed milk, and milk to the blender and blend until creamy. If the shake is too thick, add more milk in small increments until you reach your desired consistency.
- Whisk the cream until thick.
- Remove the milkshake glasses from the freezer.
- Pour the milkshake into the glasses halfway, then add some cream and push the sliced figs around the sides. Repeat until the glasses are full.
Note: You can have as many cream layers as you wish, but we recommend keeping it to preferably 2, max 3.
Topping
- Top with some whipping cream – optional.
- Wash and chop the figs reserved for the topping. Add to the top for decor.
Note: For decor, add some sprigs of mint or basil. - Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- Chill your drinking glasses immediately after drizzling them with chocolate sauce. This keeps the milkshake cooler for longer.
- Letting ice cream sit at room temperature for 10 minutes will help the milkshake blend easier.
- Avoid getting too vigorous with the blending.
- When blending, start with the lowest speed, then slowly work up to medium speed. Blend for 30 to 40 seconds.
- Add more milk or less milk to adjust the thickness of the shake.
- Use fresh, ripe, and sweet figs; it’s okay if the skins have slight bruises or are torn.
- Dairy / Vegan: Swap the dairy and cream for dairy-free milk alternatives or your favorite.
- Ice Cream: Swap the vanilla ice cream for Chocolate Ice Cream. This is an excellent treat for the kiddies.
- Figs: Using other fruits to vary the milkshake is an excellent option. Some other fruits you might want to consider are fresh dates, bananas, kiwis, and strawberries.
- Protein: For a high-protein milkshake, add your favorite vanilla protein powder and some extra milk of your choice to thin it out.
- Optional Liqueur: For those extra special occasions, add 1-2 tablespoons of your favorite liqueur, such as Bailey’s Original or Disaronno Velvet Amaretto White Cream Liqueur.
Feel free to swap any ingredient listed with whatever you have lying around. It will probably taste just as amazing! Please let us know how it was…we can’t wait to hear all about it!
