Let’s Talk Ingredients
We feel every ingredient adds to the overall taste and texture; if you remove one, it’s like you’ve removed them all.
- Milk — use full-fat whole milk for a creamy-tasting milkshake.
- Vanilla Ice Cream — use your favorite, though remember high-quality brands aren’t overpowered with artificial vanilla extract and aren’t as creamy. Or, make your own; here’s our Egg-Free Vanilla Ice Cream.
- Condensed Milk — we use carnation condensed milk, but your favorite brand should work well!
- Cream — use whipping cream for the decoration.
- Powdered Sugar — use powdered sugar, also called icing sugar in some countries. It’s used instead of caster sugar because it settles and looks better on top of the cream. It’s used for aesthetic reasons and adds a lovely final touch.
- Biscoff Spread — the texture of this smooth spread is similar to that of chocolate or peanut butter spread. However, its main flavor profile is caramel and spices. The Biscoff Spread is made with only natural ingredients and is vegan-friendly.
- Biscoff Cookies — these spiced cookies, originating from Belgium and occasionally referred to as speculoos, have a unique taste of caramel and cinnamon. They are thin, crumbly, and crispy and are a combination of biscuit and coffee. Lotus Biscoffs are widely available in supermarkets worldwide and are used in this recipe.

Customizations
Here are some foodie alternatives should you want to make some changes:
- Milk — substitute with your favorite milk. Creamy alternatives are cashew milk, soya milk, oat milk, or coconut milk from a can.
- Vanilla Ice Cream — dairy-free ice cream is a great substitute.
- Condensed Milk — for a vegan option, use a coconut-based such as Biona, Nestle’s, or Natures Charm.
- Cream — squirty, readymade whipped cream can be a great option rather than manually whipping a small batch of cream. However, it doesn’t hold its shape and has a tendency to deflate. Or use a dairy-free alternative or omit it completely.
- Powdered Sugar — a great alternative or a combination is sieved cocoa powder.
- Biscoff Spread / Cookies — substitute with your favorite biscuit spread and cookies. For cookies, use a gluten-free alternative.

When substituting ingredients, it’s essential to remember that the taste, texture, and overall result might differ, particularly if you’re substituting many ingredients.

Smoothie Vs Milkshake
Smoothies and milkshakes are popular blended beverages, but they have some key differences in ingredients and texture. Here are the main distinctions between the two:
Smoothies:
▶︎ Smoothies typically have a fruit or vegetable base, often made with fresh or frozen fruits and/or vegetables.
▶︎ The liquid component in smoothies can vary, including fruit juice, yogurt, milk (dairy or plant-based), or water.
▶︎ Smoothies are generally thicker and have a more substantial texture due to using fruits, vegetables, and sometimes yogurt. They are often perceived as healthier because they include whole, unprocessed ingredients.
▶︎ Smoothies can be nutrient-dense, providing a good source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber from fruits and vegetables.
▶︎ Various ingredients, including protein powders, greens, nuts, seeds, and supplements, can be used to customize smoothies.
Milkshakes:
▶︎ Milkshakes have a dairy or non-dairy milk base combined with ice cream, resulting in a creamy and sweet beverage.
▶︎ The primary liquid in a milkshake is milk, but some recipes might use alternatives like almond milk or soy milk.
▶︎ Milkshakes have a smooth and creamy texture, mainly due to the presence of ice cream. They are often sweetened with sugar or flavored syrups.
▶︎ Milkshakes are generally higher in calories and sugar than smoothies due to the inclusion of ice cream. They are often considered more indulgent or treat-like.
▶︎ Milkshakes typically have a sweeter flavor profile and are associated with dessert or treat categories. They come in various flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.
The main differences between smoothies and milkshakes lie in their base ingredients, texture, nutritional content, and intended purpose. Smoothies are often considered healthier and more versatile, while milkshakes are considered a sweet and indulgent treat.
