Let’s Talk Ingredients
We feel every ingredient adds to the overall taste and texture; if you remove one, it’s like you’ve removed them all.
- Milk — use full-fat whole milk for a creamy-tasting milkshake.
- Vanilla Ice Cream — use your favorite, though remember high-quality brands aren’t overpowered with artificial vanilla extract and aren’t as creamy.
- Condensed Milk — we use carnation condensed milk, but your favorite brand should work well!
- Cream — use whipping cream for the decoration.
- Oreo Cookies — use Oreo chocolate sandwich cookies.
- Vanilla Extract — use Nielsen Massey, which is made with real vanilla beans and alcohol. The vanilla is quite potent and adds a beautiful richness.
- Agave Nectar Chocolate — adds a subtle sweetness and a lovely texture to milkshakes.
For more detailed ingredients, see the recipe card.
Customizations
Here are some foodie alternatives should you want to make some changes:
- Milk — substitute with your favorite milk. Creamy dairy-free alternatives are cashew milk, soya milk, or oat milk.
- Vanilla Ice Cream — make your own Vanilla Ice Cream, or use a dairy-free ice cream.
- Condensed Milk — for a vegan option, use a coconut-based such as Biona, Nestle’s, or Natures Charm.
- Cream — squirty, readymade whipped cream can be a great option rather than manually whipping a small batch of cream. However, it doesn’t hold its shape and has a tendency to deflate. Make your own Boozy Whipping Cream, or use a dairy-free alternative, or omit it completely.
- Vanilla Extract — if you prefer a non-alcohol base, use vanilla flavoring.
- Oreo Cookies — use your favorite chocolate cookies or gluten-free.
When substituting ingredients, it’s essential to remember that the taste, texture, and overall result might differ, particularly if you’re substituting many ingredients.

Smoothie Vs Milkshake
Smoothies and milkshakes are popular blended beverages, but they have some key differences in ingredients and texture. Here are the main distinctions between the two:
Smoothies:
▶︎ Smoothies typically have a fruit or vegetable base, often made with fresh or frozen fruits and/or vegetables.
▶︎ The liquid component in smoothies can vary, including fruit juice, yogurt, milk (dairy or plant-based), or water.
▶︎ Smoothies are generally thicker and have a more substantial texture due to using fruits, vegetables, and sometimes yogurt. They are often perceived as healthier because they include whole, unprocessed ingredients.
▶︎ Smoothies can be nutrient-dense, providing a good source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber from fruits and vegetables.
▶︎ Various ingredients, including protein powders, greens, nuts, seeds, and supplements, can be used to customize smoothies.
Milkshakes:
▶︎ Milkshakes have a dairy or non-dairy milk base combined with ice cream, resulting in a creamy and sweet beverage.
▶︎ The primary liquid in a milkshake is milk, but some recipes might use alternatives like almond milk or soy milk.
▶︎ Milkshakes have a smooth and creamy texture, mainly due to the presence of ice cream. They are often sweetened with sugar or flavored syrups.
▶︎ Milkshakes are generally higher in calories and sugar than smoothies due to the inclusion of ice cream. They are often considered more indulgent or treat-like.
▶︎ Milkshakes typically have a sweeter flavor profile and are associated with dessert or treat categories. They come in various flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.
The main differences between smoothies and milkshakes are their base ingredients, texture, nutritional content, and intended purpose. Smoothies are often considered healthier and more versatile, while milkshakes are considered a sweet and indulgent treat.

Equipment
- Blender - or stick blender
Ingredients
Milkshake:
- 350 grams Vanilla Ice Cream - dairy-free or make your own vanilla ice cream
- 200 grams Milk - your favorite
- 2 tbsp Sweetened Condensed Milk - or dairy-free
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 200 grams Fresh Strawberries - hulled
- 4 tbsp Strawberry Syrup
- 4 tbsp Agave Chocolate Sauce
Topping:
- 120 grams Whipping Cream - or make your own boozy whipping cream
- 2 tbsp Strawberry Syrup
- 2 tbsp Agave Chocolate Sauce
- 4 Oreo Cookies - or your favorite
Instructions
Milkshake
- Put the glasses in the freezer to cool quickly.
- Add the vanilla ice cream, hulled strawberries, vanilla, condensed milk, and milk to the blender and blend until creamy. If the shake is too thick, add more milk in small increments until you reach your desired consistency.
- Remove the milkshake glasses from the freezer.
- Swirl some strawberry syrup around the inside of the glasses.
- Pour the milkshake into the glasses, leaving at least a cm for the cream.
Topping:
- Whip the whipping cream.
- Dollop or swirl the cream over the top of the milkshakes.
- Squash the Oreo cookies in the cream, and swirl some strawberry syrup and chocolate sauce over the top to decorate.
- Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- Chill your drinking glasses immediately after drizzling them with strawberry syrup. This keeps the milkshake cooler for longer.
- Letting ice cream sit at room temperature for 10 minutes will help the milkshake blend easier.
- Avoid getting too vigorous with the blending.
- When blending, start with the lowest speed, then slowly work up to medium speed. Blend for 30 to 40 seconds.
- Add more milk or less milk to adjust the thickness of the shake.
- To add some crunch to the milkshake, add roughly smashed cookies at the end of the blending, then pulse a few times before pouring into the glasses.
- For a high-protein milkshake, add your favorite vanilla or strawberry protein powder and some extra milk of your choice to thin it out.
- For those extra special occasions, add 1-2 tablespoons of your favorite liqueur; we recommend De Kuyper Wild Strawberry Liqueur.
- Swap the vanilla ice cream for strawberry ice cream. This is an excellent treat for the kiddies.
Feel free to swap any ingredient listed with whatever you have lying around. It will probably taste just as amazing! Please let us know how it was…we can’t wait to hear all about it!
