Let’s Talk Ingredients
We feel every ingredient adds to the overall taste and texture; if you remove one, it’s like you’ve removed them all.
- Avocados — use Hass for a creamier mousse.
- Limes — use unwaxed limes.
- Condensed Milk — we use carnation condensed milk, but your favorite brand should work well!
- Cream — adds a creamier texture.
- Salt — use Himalayan salt; it brings out the flavor and offsets the sweetness.
- Vanilla Extract — use Nielsen Massey, which is made with real vanilla beans and alcohol. The vanilla is quite potent and adds a beautiful richness to desserts.
For more detailed ingredients, see the recipe card.
Customizations
Here are some foodie alternatives should you want to make some changes:
- Avocados — can be substituted with bananas.
- Limes — lemon works as a stand-in, but nothing can fully replace the zing of a lime.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk — for a vegan option, use a coconut-based such as Biona, Nestle’s, or Natures Charm.
- Cream — there are many dairy-free options.
- Vanilla Extract — if you prefer a non-alcohol base, use vanilla flavoring.
When substituting ingredients, it’s essential to remember that the taste, texture, and overall result might differ, particularly if you’re substituting many ingredients.
If you have made the Avocado Lime Mousse with any customizations, we’d love to hear about it; please message us in the comments.
Best Sugar-Substitutes
We use the sweetened condensed milk to add sweetness to this delicious mousse. Substituting it with a sugar-sub reduces the carbohydrates to 10g per serving.
We suggest completely omitting the sweetened condensed milk and replacing it with 2-3 scoops of Yummy Sweet Sweetener; it’s better than anything else we’ve used. It will be thicker but equally as yummy. We do not advise using xylitol or erythritol sweeteners because they’re too grainy and will not dissolve very well.
Please let us know in the comments what sugar substitute you used and how much. This will help other super cooks.

Notes
- Use fresh or even organic ingredients for a better taste.
- Use ripe avocados for the best flavor and creamy texture. Look for avocados that are slightly soft to the touch and yield to gentle pressure. Overly ripe avocados might have a strong flavor and could affect the overall taste of the mousse.
- Always use fresh lime juice and zest for the brightest and most vibrant lime flavor. Avoid bottled lime juice, which may lack a fresh, zesty taste.
- The sweetened condensed milk adds sweetness and creaminess to the mousse.
- Whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form before folding it into the avocado mixture. This will give the mousse a light and airy texture.
- Refrigerate the mousse for at least 1–2 hours before serving to allow it to set and chill. This will also enhance the flavors and improve the overall texture.
- Adjust the amount of lime juice, zest, and sweetened condensed milk to suit your taste preferences. Some people prefer a stronger lime flavor, while others want it sweeter.
- When combining the whipped cream with the avocado mixture, gently fold the two together to preserve the mousse’s light and fluffy texture. Overmixing can deflate the whipped cream and make the mousse less airy.
- Avocado mousse is best enjoyed fresh, as avocados can oxidize and lose their vibrant green color over time. So, make it just before serving or store it with plastic wrap pressed directly against the surface to minimize exposure to air.
- Avocados: Can be substituted with bananas.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk and Cream: Substitute with dairy-free such as coconut condensed milk, soy cream, or coconut cream.
