Let’s Talk Ingredients
We feel every ingredient adds to the chocolate’s overall taste and texture; if you remove one, it’s like you’ve removed them all.
- Oil โ we use coconut oil to help the brownie set firm.
- Cinnamon โ use ground Ceylon cinnamon because its flavor is sweet and has a beautiful, fresh aroma and exquisite taste.
- Goji Berries โ use dried goji berries because they enhance the flavor and add sweetness.
- Cocoa Powder โ comes in natural and Dutch versions. Any unsweetened will work! The quality of the cocoa makes all the difference; the brands we like are Green & Blacks and Callebaut.
- Dates โ use Medjool pitted dates because theyโre beautifully fat and sweet.
- Nuts โ use Brazil nuts, preferably organic, because they arenโt covered in rancid oils.
- Salt โ use Himalayan salt; it brings out the flavor and offsets the sweetness.
- Chocolate โ we use 70% dark chocolate. Other good-quality brands are Lindt, Ghirardelli, Guittard, Valrhona or Callebaut.
For more detailed ingredients, see the recipe card.
Customizations
Here are some foodie alternatives should you want to make some changes:
- Oil โ we often use unrefined cocoa butter, the brownie is less likely to crumble when taken on picnics. It will need to be melted in the microwave or bain marine before using it.
- Cinnamon โ a pinch of chili powder, nutmeg, or mixed spice.
- Cocoa Powderโuse cacao powder and substitute equal amounts.
- Nuts โ hazelnuts are great, but they do make the brownie slightly denser, too.
When substituting ingredients, it’s essential to remember that the taste, texture, and overall result might differ, particularly if you’re substituting many ingredients.
If you have made the chocoholic Superfood Brownie with any customizations, we’d love to hear about it; please message us in the comments.
Why Use Medjool Dates?
Medjool dates are a perfect ingredient for these superfood brownies because they’re rich in essential nutrients. You can use any dates for the chocoholic Superfood Brownie, but we’ve found Medjools provides a better consistency.
Dates are a good source of dietary fiber, aiding digestion, promoting a feeling of fullness, and preventing constipation. They can be a healthier alternative to refined sugars for satisfying sweet cravings and boosting energy levels.
Brazil nuts are renowned for their rich flavor and high nutritional value. They’re highly nutritious and packed with essential nutrients, especially selenium and magnesium. Brazil nuts are also rich in healthy fats, including omega-3 fatty acids. They grind finely, making them perfect to combine with dates.
Instructions – Overview
The Superfood Brownie is easy to make and is even easier to eat. Here’s a breakdown of how to get started on your baking journey (more detailed instructions are in the recipe card):

Brownie Base:
โถ๏ธ Add nuts to the blender and grind into a crumbly flour-like consistency. Be careful not to over-mix because you donโt want it to become nut butter. Add melted coconut oil and all other ingredients, then blend until combined. Donโt worry about odd lumps of dates, nuts, or goji bits.
โถ๏ธ Pour into a 23 cm dish and press down; a dessert spoon is useful for this procedure. Put it in the fridge to set for at least 1 hour, but preferably 2-4 hours. Alternatively, put it in the freezer for approximately half an hour.
Ganache:
โถ๏ธ The ganache can be added before or after refrigerating the brownie. To prepare the ganache, melt the chocolate on the stove or the microwave, then pour over the brownie. Lastly, decorate with Goji berries or your favorite toppings.
For more detailed instructions, notes, and ideasโฆsee the recipe card.
Removing From The Dish
Superfood Brownies can be a little challenging to remove from a dish without a detachable base (unflappable sides). For best results, use a square baking pan, simply because it will be much easier to remove.
Warm a knife under a hot tap and pat it dry. Run the warmed knife around the edges before taking the superfood brownie out of the pan. Unclip the springform, lift it off, and gently slide the brownie off the loose cake pan bottom onto a plate. Using the warmed knife, cut the brownie into bite-size squares.
Tools You’ll Need
Want to make the best Superfood Brownie? Using the correct equipment for preparation is essential; we think they’re a big helping hand. We understand that you might already have some of these kitchen tools to make this recipe, or you might want to use other tools and may not require our recommendations. Here are some of our suggestions to get you started:
- Food Processor – this makes it easier to grind the nuts and bind all the ingredients together.
- Saucepan – to melt the chocolate or use a microwave.
- Mixing Bowl – used as a bain marie to melt the chocolate in the pan or to add directly to the microwave.
- Silicone Spatula โ for stirring and incorporating all the ingredients smoothly.
- Weighing Scales and Measuring Spoons โ to measure the ingredients accurately.
If you love those gadgets for this recipe, then you’ll love this food processor for mixing, chopping, grating, whisking, beating, and more. It’s our go-to for many of our recipes, and we think every budding chef needs it.

Magimix Food Processor โ we’ve owned the 5200 XL for over 30 years, and it’s still going strong. It has BPA-free bowls, the motor is quiet, and it is built to last. We believe the 4200 XL is the better option as it’s a middle-ground size to work with. All sizes offer an unbeatable 30-year motor and 3-year parts guarantee.

Pairing
Superfood Brownies are frequently eaten as a standalone dessert, but can easily be paired. Here are some suggestions and our favorite go-to’s what to eat with them:
โถ๏ธ High on our list is a drizzle of warm chocolate sauce that can enhance the chocolatey aspects of the brownie. We highly recommend agave chocolate sauce.
โถ๏ธ A rich, dark roast coffee goes wonderfully with the brownie. The coffee’s slight bitterness complements the sweetness, creating a lovely, balanced combination.

- 1 tsp Ground Ceylon Cinnamon
- 30 grams Goji berries

- 300 grams Brazil Nuts
- 1 pinch Himalayan Salt
Optional Ganache
- 100 grams 70% Dark Chocolate - (ie Green & Blacks)

Instructions
Brownie Base
- Add nuts to the blender and grind into a crumbly flour-like consistency. Be careful not to over-mix because you donโt want it to become nut butter.
- Melt the coconut oil in the microwave in 20-second increments or use a double boiler pot method. Add to the blender.
Note:If you’re using unrefined cocoa butter, it will need to be melted in the microwave or bain-marine before using it. - Add the remaining ingredients to the blender and blend until combined. Donโt worry about odd lumps of dates, nuts, or goji bits.
- Pour into a 23cm dish and press down; a dessert spoon is helpful for this procedure.
- Put it into the fridge to set for an hour or put in the freezer for half an hour.
Ganache
- The ganache can be added before or after refrigeration.
- Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 20-second increments or use a double boiler pot method.
- Once melted, pour over the brownie, ensuring the melted chocolate is evenly distributed.
- Top the brownie with Goji berries or anything else you might prefer.
- Cut into portions, serve, and enjoy when you're ready!
Notes
- We do not recommend using other dried fruits except dates, as they will not produce the same texture and taste.
- A food processor is required to chop and combine the ingredients. This is because the Brazil nuts and dates would be too difficult to grind together in anything else.
- While the ganache is optional, it’s worth adding for its extra taste. It adds a professional touch and an intense, naughty-but-nice yumminess!
- If you want to speed up the setting time, put it in the freezer for at least half an hour and then place it in the fridge.
- Use good quality 70% dark chocolate for the best chocolate flavor.
- Cinnamon:ย A pinch of chili powder, nutmeg, or mixed spice.
- Nuts:ย Hazelnuts are great, but they do make the brownie slightly denser.
