Notes
If you follow our tips, you will create a delicious, well-balanced Slow Cook Pea Apple Soup like a pro:
- Avoid using frozen peas, as the result will be thin. Dried peas may seem like a hassle, but they are worth the preparation.
- Soaking your peas overnight will enhance the flavor of this soup, and less cooking time is needed.
- Using a slow cooker has its advantages. The flavors of the vegetables meld and intensify over time, and you don't have to worry about the soup burning or overcooking even if you're late back home.
- If you don't have a slow cooker, you can still make the soup in a saucepan on the stove. However, you must monitor it to ensure it doesn't dry out. You'll also need to simmer it on a very low setting and add water periodically. It's not recommended to leave it unattended for the whole day, as you can with a slow cooker.
- Choose fresh, ripe apples for the best flavor. Varieties like Granny Smith or Fuji can work well, offering a nice balance of sweetness and tartness.
- Taste the soup as you go or before serving, and adjust the seasoning. If it's too sweet, add a touch of lemon juice or a pinch of salt to balance the flavors.
- Blend the soup until it reaches your desired smoothness level. Some prefer a smooth soup, while others like a slightly chunky texture.
- If the soup is too thick, thin it with vegetable broth or water until it reaches your desired consistency.
- Although this recipe doesn't include meat, it can be added. A good choice is cooked ham hock or pancetta. When the soup is fully cooked and blended, sprinkle the meat over the top just before serving.
