The good news is this delicious cheese burger recipe is nut-free, sugar-free, and egg-free. With some substitutions, it can be gluten-free and dairy-free.
We know this juicy burger is different from others. We first tried it at a friend’s house about 40 years ago; it was so yummy that we’ve been making it this way since. The difference is that we’ve combined it with French Onion Soup; well, who would have thought it would create a delicious symphony of flavors and textures? We certainly couldn’t believe it until we saw how perfect it was in flavor and texture.
Whether served alongside your favorite side dishes, such as fries, or simply on their own, these burgers are guaranteed to be a hit with family and friends alike. So fire up the grill, gather your ingredients, and get ready to savor the ultimate burger experience with this mouthwatering recipe.
Our huskies love anything MEAT; perhaps your doggos do as well. They generally lay at our feet when we’re eating and are usually still for the entire time, but there are some foods that excite them more than others. Just the smell of the burgers cooking puts them in instant excitement mode, and then the cheese comes out of the fridge!
We can hear your voices now!
Is it ok to give dogs burgers? Generally, the answer is YES, but if the burgers include onions then the answer is 100% NO because onions can make dogs very sick.

Let’s Talk Ingredients
We feel every ingredient adds to the overall taste and texture; if you remove one, it’s like you’ve removed them all.
- Beef — use a quality beef steak mince. Angus is incredibly tasty.
- Soup Mix — use Knorr or Liptons; both are equally as good.
- Oil — use rice bran oil because it can withstand high temperatures without turning rancid.
- Worcestershire Sauce — use a quality brand such as Lea & Perrins.
- Bacon — unsmoked or smoked.
- Buns — use traditional burger buns or brioche are excellent.
- Cheese — use your favorite or preferably Swiss, Cheddar, or Provolone are excellent.
- Salad — use your favorite lettuce leaves, sliced tomatoes, and thinly sliced red onions.
- Sauces — use traditional ketchup, tomato relish, or mustard such as Dijon or English.
For more detailed ingredients, see the recipe card.
Customizations
Here are some foodie alternatives should you want to make some changes:
- Red Onions — for an alternative try deep-fried or oven-baked battered onion rings. These can be found fresh or frozen at most supermarkets.
- Buns — gluten-free is a great alternative.
- Cheese — use dairy-free.
When substituting ingredients, remember that the taste, texture, and overall result might differ, particularly if you’re substituting many ingredients.
If you have made the Cheese Burger with any customizations, we’d love to hear about it; please message us in the comments.
Instructions – Overview
Cheese Burger is easy to make and is even easier to eat. Here’s a breakdown of how to get started on your baking journey (more detailed instructions are in the recipe card):

▶︎ The key to mastering Cheeseburgers lies in mixing the minced beef and soup mix and forming them into thin patties. This makes the cooking easier and quicker, and the taste is phenomenal.
▶︎ Cook them for about 3-4 minutes on each side for medium doneness, or until cooked to your preference. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on top of each patty to melt.
▶︎ While the patties are cooking, cook the bacon slices until crispy or as you prefer them. Meanwhile, slice the burger buns in half, lightly toast them, and prepare the salad.
▶︎ These juicy beef burgers sandwiched with bacon, cheese, and salad are assembled between the toasted burger buns. Serve with extra salad.

Tools You’ll Need

We understand that you might already have some of these kitchen tools to make this recipe, or you might want to use other tools and may not require our recommendations. Here are some of our suggestions to get you started:
- Frying Pan or use a BBQ for the summer season.
- Mixing Bowl – to bind the meat ingredients.
- Thermapen – is a great little tool to test meat temperature.
- Silicone Spatula – for stirring and incorporating all the ingredients smoothly, and used for turning the beef burgers when frying.
- Weighing Scales and Measuring Spoons – to measure the ingredients accurately.
If you love those gadgets for this recipe, then you’ll love this food processor for mixing, chopping, grating, whisking, beating, and more. If you own a food processor, then you’d know that they’re a lifesaver for making burgers. It’s our go-to for many of our recipes, and we think every budding chef needs it.

Magimix Food Processor — we’ve owned the 5200 XL for over 30 years, and it’s still going strong. It has BPA-free bowls, the motor is quiet, and it is built to last. We believe the 4200 XL is the better option as it’s a middle-ground size to work with. All sizes offer an unbeatable 30-year motor and 3-year parts guarantee.

- Thermapen - optional
Ingredients
Burger:
- 500 grams Beef Steak Mince
- French Onion Soup Mix - Knorr or Liptons
- 100 grams Rice Bran Oil - average quantity for frying, or use your favorite
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
- 4 slices Bacon
- 4 Burger Buns - brioche are excellent, gluten-free option

- 4 Red Onion - sliced, or cooked onion rings
- 4 Tomato - sliced
- 4 Lettuce Leaves
- Relish - optional
- Mustard - your favorite
Instructions
Preparing
- In a bowl, add the minced beef, soup mix, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well.
- Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into quite flat burger patties.
- Heat a frying pan over medium-high heat and brush it with a little oil.
- Place the burger patties on the hot grill pan and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side for medium doneness, or until cooked to your preference. If you prefer, test your patties for doneness using a thermapen.
- In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on top of each patty to melt.
Bacon
- In a separate pan, cook the bacon slices until they are crispy, or how you prefer them.
Assembling
- Slice the burger buns in half and lightly toast them if desired.
- Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun.
- Add a cooked burger patty with melted cheese on top of the lettuce.
- Place a slice of tomato and onion on top of the patty.
- Add the bacon slices on top of the tomato and onion.
- Add relish, mustard or other favorite toppings.
- Finally, cover each burger with the top half of the bun.
- Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- Cheese: Choose a high-quality cheese that melts well and complements the flavors of the burger. Gruyère or Swiss cheese are classic choices, but you can also experiment with other options like provolone or fontina.
- Toasting Buns: Toasting the burger buns adds a delicious crunch and prevents them from becoming soggy from the juices of the burger and onions. You can toast them lightly in a skillet or toaster until they’re golden brown.
- Sauces: Consider adding a flavorful sauce to your burger, such as a homemade French onion aioli, tomato chutney, or a creamy mustard sauce.
- Layering: Layer the ingredients of your burger thoughtfully to ensure each bite is balanced and flavorful. Start with the bottom bun, then add the beef patty, onions, cheese, and any other toppings you desire. Finish with the top bun and press gently to hold everything together.
- Vegetarian: Substitute the beef patty with a plant-based burger patty or a portobello mushroom for a vegetarian version.
- Dairy-Free: Use dairy-free parmesan and dairy-free sliced cheese.
- Buns: Gluten-free is a great alternative.
